the end of it

I have been arguing that in Catholic societies words are more important than actions. In Protestant societies, on the contrary, actions matter more than words. This applies also to the cardinal sins committed against each of those societies.

As I tried to show in my previous post, the cardinal sin in a Catholic society is dissent or heresy - a sin that is committed by words. Rather, in a Protestant society the cardinal sin is breaking the law - a sin that is committed by action.

Freedom of speech is an institution of Protestant societies. People are in these societies free to speak out their minds about any issue, what is restricted to them is their freedom to act. Actions are severely restricted by law and the law is strictly enforced. By contrast, in Catholic societies people have much more freedom to act. What is restricted to them is their freedom of speech, which must conform to orthodoxy.

The greatest sin of all in Catholic societies is denying truth (God, in a religious sense) and the greatest crime of all is blasphemy, that is, offenses to God and the sacred because it devalues what is most precious in human life. As soon as a Catholic society, under the banner of freedom of expression, becomes tolerant to offending and devaluing God, the next step is for people to feel free to offend and devalue one another. For a Catholic society, which is otherwise a very personal, friendly and humane society, this is the end of it.
.
Catholic societies are destroyed when they attempt to imitate the Protestant institution of freedom of expression which usually comes along with democracy. First, they attack the Church; second, they attack God; finally, they attack the people.
