I would like to summarize below some of the conclusions I reached over the last two years or so on the subject of Liberalism. When I refer to freedom I mean personal freedom.
No human society can do away with God.
Christianity, like all other great religions, is a great intellectual system.
There is no freedom where there is no God.
.
Freedom is your ability to do what ought to be done (independently of any benefits it might bring you such as those of being popular, profitable or satisfying your ego; in some cases, the exercise of freedom might bring you a lot of personal harm).
.
The greatest enemy of freedom is not equality or even socialism. It is democracy.
Liberalism is not a political doctrine. It is a moral doctrine.
The origins of freedom are religious.
Freedom is not a state of affairs, a gift that is given to you. It is a process, something you conquer (if you wish) as you go through life.
Catholic teaching is a doctrine of personal freedom.
A liberal political party is doomed to failure. It will end up being liberal only in its name.
The most distinguishing characteristic of a liberal society is non-exclusion of peaceful people.
