Of her book The God of the Machine (1943) as well as of Rose Wilder Lane's The Discovery of Freedom, published the same year, Albert Jay Nock, then doyen of American individualism wrote that both women had "shown the male world of this period how to think fundamentally. They make all of us male writers look like Confederate money. They don't fumble and fiddle around - every shot goes straight to the centre".
