If you are Portuguese, Brazil is probably the only country in the World where, once you set foot there, you feel immediately at home. Language is obviously the most important common factor. There are others though: food, architecture, even bureaucracy. The fact that the capital of Portugal in the early eigtheenth century was for a number of years displaced to Brasil left a distinctive imprint in its public administration.

Economic and social ties between Portugal and Brazil are getting closer again. For the Portuguese, Brasil is their second home when their economy is not doing well or at times of political trouble. For Brazilians, Portugal is their natural door of access to the European Union. The following is some economic and social data about Brazil.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the World, equivalent to 98 times de size of Portugal. In terms of population, Brasil is also fifth in the World (200 milion) with twenty times as many people as Portugal. Brasil is the ninth largest economy in the World with a GDP, adjusted for purchasing power parities, about eight times greater than Portugal's. S. Paulo is the fourth largest city in the World (18 million).

Brasil is a top World producer of several commodities: meat (3rd), cereals (7th), fruit (3rd), sugar (1st), coffee (1st), cocoa (6th), tin (5th), nickel (10th), aluminium (6th), oil seeds (2nd). GDP per capita, adjusted for purchasing power parities, is about half that of Portugal. The cost os living is 15% lower. Brazil is predominantly a services economy (54% of GDP). Main trading partners are the USA (20%), Argentina (8%) and China (7%). The Index of Economic Freedom for Brasil is 61 (Portugal: 67), whereas the Human Development Index stands at 79 (Portugal: 90).
