quite good

The Portuguese are not good at speculating with ideas. They never produced great philosophers or social thinkers outside of the religious sphere, and they never will. Their culture does not permit them.

My belief is that they are quite good at speculating with real things, namely with money. You are invited to try your own capabilities here. Is the market (Nasdaq) today going up or down from its 2:00 PM level? (I do it everyday with real money, and a substantial amount of it).
.
The great Discoveries of the Portuguese in the late fifteenth, early sixteenth centuries were first and foremost great acts of sheer speculation through the unkown seas. It was pure speculation (what is beyond the occean, if anything?) that made them rich. Surely, some of them died in the way. Those were real great men: they risked their lives and on the whole they won.
