What would have led President Cavaco Silva to adress the Portuguese people this week about a subject that not half of one percent of the population could understand?
The answer is clear to me. He came before the population to complain that parliamentary, party democracy is losing respect for him and taking away powers from him.
He should not be upset, though. Democracy, as the rule of the masses, has no respect for the individual. If the President thought that by virtue of his position he would be an exception, well, he is now learning the lesson the hard way.
