between autocracy and anarchy

Since the Enlightenment the fate of all Catholic Nations has been to live between autocracy and anarchy, with democracy serving as a transitional regime from the former to the latter.

Autocracy is the natural political regime of Catholic societies. However, the Enlightenment and, formerly, the Reformation with their strong reaction against personal authority, injected in those societies the virus of rebellion against authority. Thus, sooner or later, the personal authority of the autocrat is contested, and autocracy gives its way to democracy.

Under democracy, the authority of the autocrat is replaced by the authority of the masses. However, being highly individualistic, Catholic societies have no respect for the masses. Thus, sooner or later, everyone is doing as he pleases and the stage of anarchy is reached. As anarchy produces its destructive effects on society there is only one way to restore social order: calling a new autocrat.
