should not leave him alone

In the commentary box here, zazie has provided the link to an article that expresses better than I could my ideas on the subject.

I believe Pope Benedict XVI is a great thinker. I also believe that the difficulties that Portugal went through over the last few centuries are the result of the fact that we did lose miserably a battle of ideas. I am not of the opinion that our troubles stemmed from any missing D. Sebastião. Spain and other Catholic countries had the same troubles over the same period without being in the waiting for any D. Sebastião.
.
The real reason for our current and past troubles is that Portuguese intellectuals, and Catholic intellectuals in general, were not, and are not, strong enough to resist the assault that was mounted upon them by first-rated Protestant intellectuals brought about by the Reformation.
.
About one year ago in this blog I tried to identify the most serious intellectual enemies of our culture and country. I started with David Hume (see all posts here). I am now in the process of identifying a second one - Immanuel Kant. It goes without saying that I have nothing against these men qua men. I do have a lot, though, against their thinking. And I really believe that if we are going to be proud of our country and culture again we must fight the ideas of these men. The Pope is already doing it for us. We should not leave him alone.
