Franco's regime

In a Telegraph's article today (here ) about Spain's victory in the Euro-2008 two aspects struck me. The first was to learn that the Spanish national anthem has no lyrics. As I searched for the reason, I concluded that it was the result of one those typical wars of words in which Catholic countries seem to specialize and which at times make them laughable to the World. Surely, the British would not miss this opportunity to laugh a bit.

Second, it seems that the British cannot talk about Spain without mentioning Franco and his regime in a depreciating tone. This is true of the articles' author and of the commentators to the point that a Spanish commentator is led to ask if one can talk about Britain without mentioning Churchill (I would say Maria Tudor). And yet, Franco´s regime was the most prosperous period of modern Spanish history. Not the least in soccer. The Spanish national team won the Euro-1964 and Real Madrid won the first five European Championship Leagues, followed by two wins by Benfica, another country with an authoritarian regime that the British seem to abhor so much. May I add that during Franco regime Spain did have lyrics in her national anthem.
