If there is a people in the World who took Catholicism at heart and who took it heartly to the farthest regions of the World, I think the Portuguese are those people. For the better or for the worse - I happen to think for the better - the dominant trait of Portuguese culture is Catholicism.
The main benefit of it? A unified country where people do really like each other, despite their talk on the contrary. (As I have attempted to argue, Catholics in general, the Portuguese in particular, do talk too much, but we should not pay attention to, or take them seriously in their talking. It's just talk).
I feel a little proud that my culture seems to be on the right side of history when I read the comments to this article on the schism in the Anglican Church. Look at what the readers say, how they feel disgusted with the Church of England for failing to provide them with direction in these most difficult, uncertain and conflicting times. See how they blame (British) liberalism. Note how they mention the Catholic Church as an example of solid unity. Watch for yourself how some of them announce their intention to join the Catholic Church. This is not only good for the Catholic Church. It is good for Portugal as well and for all Catholic countries.
My only concern remains the same: how come that we are trying in Portugal to imitate British and Protestant culture with our petty, maniac idea of modernizing?
