stupid rather than wicked



"The Church often seems to take the position that man is rather stupid than wicked" .
(Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, op. cit. p. 189).

Among other things, this vision is what makes criminal laws and criminal practice much softer in Catholic countries than in Protestant ones where man is more readily seen as being wicked rather than stupid.

The Economics of Crime, initiated by economists such as Gary Becker, where the criminal is seen as a perfectly rational decision-maker weighting the costs and benefits of his actions leads to much harsher criminal laws than would be the case if, as in the Catholic tradition, he is merely seen as a pobre diabo who does not know what he is doing.
(PS: It seems to me that it is also in this Catholic, pious, sense that Joaquim is referring below to the populaça)
