The conflict of values between Protestant and Catholic cultures which I have been discussing, is clearly illustrated in this episode in the European Parliament.
Being a very Catholic country where words are more important than actions, Poland obviously needs censorship laws against the promotion of homossexuality (and several other subjects). I am quite sure though that, despite those laws, homossexuals are not segregated in Poland and lead quite normal lives amid the Polish population.
On the other side of the debate is the Protestant philosophy where action (or fact) is more important than words. These countries do not have censorship laws against homossexuals or any other group. In practice, though, they do segregate homossexuals and other groups (such as muslims). The most visible case in the World of segregation of homossexuals is the city of S. Francisco in the United States, a mostly Protestant country.
As one Polish participant in the European Parliament debate acutely points out, Jews were not persecuted in Poland. They were actually persecuted in those most liberal countries of Northern Europe and found refuge in the much intolerant Catholic Poland.
