Tradition is an essential component of a free society. People are borne into it, it is their natural worldview. It represents their way of doing things and of relating to each other and to the universe. A society that undermines its traditions, or attempts to supersede them, cannot prosper. It is a conflicting society and ultimately an oppressive one.
There is no individual freedom where people cannot do peaceful things as they have usually done, and are coerced to do otherwise - even if it is allegedly for their betterment. Tradition is the standard. When tradition is disrupted, it is not only freedom that fails - justice usually follows suit. A country that does away with its traditions - often in the name of modernization - will end up with neither freedom nor justice.
