Of all the empires of modern ages, The Portuguese empire was a most extraordinary accomplishment and the one that lasted longer. It was the first to begin with the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 when Portugal´s population totaled no more than one million people. It was the last to die, with the delivery of Macau to China in 1999 when Portugal remained a small country of 10 million people. At its height in the early seventeenth century it extended for half of the World.
