PT - He set as a condition to accept the GBD job that information on his private assets should not be made public...The Ministry of Finance, acting on behalf of the Government, accepted that condition...Last Friday Parliament overruled the Government...
DT - Is that so Peter?...It seems that Portugal and GBD are in very good shape...for MP's to be wasting their time on such a minor issue...
PT - Unfortunately... both Portugal and GBD are bankrupt... How do you think Parliament should have handled this issue, Don?
DT - Well... If Government agreed with Sundays' condition...what is agreed is agreed!...Parliament should at best put the Government on notice that next time it cannot agree on such condition...Government and Parliament are both part of the same institution, the Portuguese State...The State should set the example ...It cannot agree and then disagree...
PT - I share your view, Don ... but these people are overly legalistic, you know...more than 50% of Portuguese MP's are jurists...and they use the laws to make petty politics...not to promote the interests of the nation...

PT - No, Don...legalism is against our culture... the Catholic culture of the Portuguese people is profoundly anti-legalistic...following in the footsteps of Christ who was overwhelmingly anti-legalistic...
DT - Oh Peter...it is so nice...I feel I am becoming more and more of a Catholic...I am also an anti-legalist... As I told the American people in my short vídeo presentation I'm going to scrap a lot of legislation...
PT - The Catholic Church has been in existence for more than two thousand years ...and yet all of Canon Law can be contained in a small book...As for Portuguese legislation you would need a big truck...

Juncker,
Eu nasci em
Portugal, mas considero que a Europa é a minha casa. Aprecio a nossa
civilização, as nossas cidades, as nossas paisagens, e, sobretudo, os nossos
valores.
Exportamos a
civilização europeia para lugares longínquos e não podemos deixar de sentir
orgulho quando constatamos que os nossos valores floresceram noutros pontos do
globo. A Declaração de Independência dos EUA, por exemplo, é uma obra-prima que
presta homenagem a John Locke, um dos melhores pensadores nascidos na Europa.
‹‹Consideramos estas verdades como evidentes por
si mesmas, que todos os homens são criados iguais, dotados pelo Criador de
certos direitos inalienáveis, que entre estes estão a vida, a liberdade e a
busca da felicidade››.
Também me fascina
a visão que a UE tem de um continente livre e pacífico, mas receio que este
grandioso projeto esteja ameaçado. E é este receio que me leva a dirigir-lhe
esta reflexão, numa carta aberta para ser partilhada por todos.
Os europeus, hoje
em dia, sentem-se inseguros e com pouca representação. Têm menos liberdade e
menos oportunidades de buscar os seus sonhos do que no passado recente.
É por isso que há
tanto populismo a alimentar-se destes sentimentos; populismo e demagogia que
ameaçam a democracia.
O Brexit foi um
sinal de descontentamento. O mesmo descontentamento que também germinava nos
EUA e que culminou com a eleição do Sr. Donald Trump. Uma eleição que tem sido
interpretada como uma revolta do povo contra o “status quo”. Ora estes eventos
devem fazer-nos refletir.
A globalização
criou riqueza e lucros fabulosos para as multinacionais que se tornaram
verdadeiro empórios, mas ao mesmo tempo as classes médias foram debilitadas até
um ponto de rotura, e claro, de revolta.
A Terceira Via,
de Clinton, Blair e Schroder (tão bem exposta por Anthony Giddens no seu livro
“The Third Way”), continha a promessa de que a globalização, enquanto geradora
de riqueza, podia contribuir para fortalecer a estrutura social e preservar
valores fundamentais. Valores como a Comunidade, Oportunidades,
Responsabilidade e Rigor. Infelizmente, esta promessa não se cumpriu.
Hoje, há menos
coesão social, menos oportunidades, e a responsabilidade e o rigor também não
melhoraram. As populações, portanto, sentem-se enganadas e frustradas.
A Terceira Via
colocou a globalização em “esteroides” e “anestesiou” o empreendedorismo local,
com hiper-regulação, impostos elevados e falta de financiamento. Assim, não é
de admirar que as pessoas deem ouvidos ao primeiro populista que lhes fala de
mudança.
As correções
necessárias são de tal magnitude que é necessária uma Quarta Via. Uma Quarta Via
que trate dos desequilíbrios resultantes do processo de globalização e que, em
simultâneo, liberte as amarras impostas ao empreendedorismo local.
Até os campeões
da globalização aceitam que são necessárias correções, mas estas afetam apenas
um dos pratos da balança. Para obter o equilíbrio, o outro prato deve conter
reformas que libertem o potencial económico local.
O igualitarismo,
um importante objetivo da Terceira Via, não deve abranger apenas a
redistribuição de riqueza. Deve haver “igualitarismo de oportunidades”, e este
deve estar no centro da Quarta Via.
Esta nova
abordagem é fundamental para melhorar o rendimento das classes trabalhadoras,
estagnado há demasiado tempo, e proceder às mudanças necessária para preservar
a democracia.
A Europa pode, em
boa verdade, ser uma casa para todos, mas temos de mudar de rumo.

Ref: Europe needs a Fourth Way with equal opportunities for all
Sir,
Portugal is my place of birth, but I consider Europe to be my Home.
I love our civilization, our cities, our landscapes, and, above all, our
values.
We exported our civilization overseas and I feel proud of seeing
our values flourish in distant
places, all over the globe. The Declaration of Independence of the
US, for example, is a masterpiece which
pays tribute to John Locke, one of the best thinkers born in our
continent.
‹‹We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these
are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness››.
I am also fond of the EU vision of a free and peaceful continent,
but I’m afraid that this grandiose objective is menaced. Europeans, today, feel
insecure, unrepresented, and have less liberty and little opportunities for
pursuing their dreams.
This is the reason why there is a rampant populism in the EU,
obviously praying on these feelings; a populism and demagoguery that threatens
democracy.
Brexit was a clear sign of discontentment. The same discontentment which
was also brewing in the US and that culminated with the election of Mr. Donald
Trump. An election that has been interpreted as a revolt of the people against
the establishment. These events should force us to reflect.
Globalization generated wealth and profits for multinationals which
became powerful mammoths, while the middle classes were squeezed to the point
of rupture and, of course, revolt.
The Third Way, of Clinton, Blair and Schroder, so well captured by
Anthony Giddens in “The Third Way”, held a promise that, while creating wealth,
globalization would ultimately strengthen our social infrastructures and help
preserve fundamental social values. Community, Opportunity, Responsibility, and
Accountability (CORA - the acronym used by Giddens). Unfortunately, this
promise was unmet.
Today, there is less communal cohesion, less opportunities for most
people, and responsibility
and accountability have not flourished either. People, therefore,
feel cheated and frustrated.
Third Way politics contributed to putting global companies “on
steroids”, while “anesthetizing” local entrepreneurship, through hyperregulation,
hipertaxation and lack of funding. It’s little wonder, then, that people turned
to populists that promised “change”.
The correction shift that is necessary has such a magnitude that
it’s time for a Fourth Way. A Fourth Way that addresses imbalances occurring in
the globalization process, but, at the same time, remove constraints imposed on
local and national business ventures and initiatives.
Even the champions of globalization acknowledge that corrections
are necessary, but this weights only on one side of the scale. To obtain a
healthy equilibrium, the other side of the scale must include reforms to
liberate the local economic potential.
Egalitarianism, an important goal of the Third Way political
agenda, shouldn’t apply only to redistribution, but also to opportunities, and
this must, indeed, be at the centre of a Fourth Way.
This new approach is fundamental to lift the income of the working
classes and bring about the real change that is necessary to preserve our
cherished democracy.
Europe can truly be a home for all.
