Mrs. Conceição

...

Belinha, Joaquim's six year-old, youngest daughter, was sitting on her father's lap trying to make sense of all the fuss around her. On the table, there were now seven dictionaries and three encyclopedias of the Portuguese language...
...

Sarah had completed the list of Dragão's extraordinary words more than three hours ago. But a tremendous discussion broke out concerning method. Joaquim and PA argued that an alphabetical order should be followed. The girls insisted that the words should be analyzed in the order they appeared in the text...
...
For more than fifteen minutes now, Belinha had been reckless on her father's knees trying to get his attention...
...
The turmoil had by now reached Joaquim's neighbourhood. Mrs. Ermelinda walked from her house across the street and knocked at Joaquim's to check if everybody was OK. Linda grabbed this opportunity to put forward a solution to end the impasse:

-Why don't we start with this funny word ... peenteelo ...?, she said in her heavy American accent pointing at pentelho.

Joaquim immediately lowered his eyes. This was the opportunity Belinha was looking for to get her father's attention. Pointing her little finger at Dragão's post, which was now lying on the table, she said:

-Daddy ... daddy ..., isn't this what my teacher, Mrs. Conceição, calls a pastelada ... isn't it daddy...?
