Nobel prize winner economist George J. Stigler once said that the World is governed by interests, not ideas. This was Stigler´s way to set a line between himself and some of his colleagues, like Friedman and Hayek, who truly believed in the power of ideas to shape society and who spent most of their lives preaching about them.

Stigler´s emphasis on the primacy of interests over ideas is a useful insight to analyze Portuguese society. The Portuguese do not believe in ideas to change society, certainly not in abstract ideas or theories. And yet, this is a country of missionaries, of people who, to some extent, lived by ideas alone and who colonized half of the World literally by preaching - and sex.

Ideas in this conservative country were always a world apart where a tiny intellectual elite - originally, priests - would see that the norms of social behaviour were followed, and eventually would rationalize the more practical matters of life, like business and sex. One event of Portuguese history might help to shed some light on this point.

When Fernão de Magalhães was returning home from the first trip around the World he stopped at the islands which would become known as the Phillipines. His crew was mostly Portuguese. When the sailors set foot on land, there was an instant attraction between them and native women. Wild sex erupted spontaneously and soon local men became jealous of the Portuguese. Some conflicts arose, threatening the hospitality accorded to the navigators. Magalhães then called on the chaplain to discipline the men. At the mass, the chaplain told them that it was a grave sin to have sex with unchristian women. The sailors sat silently hearing the priest. Once the mass was over, they went back to the women, first baptized them, and then went on with sex as wildly as before. This might have been the first case of safe sex recorded in modern Western history.

This episode might help to explain the role that Portuguese culture reserves for ideas. The purpose of ideas is not to change society, but to rationalize practical behaviour, which is dictated by interests. That is why Portuguese society never produced, and is not expected to produce, great thinkers and philosophers. Their expertise is of a different kind. They are experts at producing reasons for doing what is in their interest to do. Excuses, not ideas, are their true intellectual business. As for ideas, specially new ideas and ideologies, they import all of them, originally from France and Germany, lately from Britain and the United States.

the darkest moments

... the apparent attempt to use criminal law to suppress political expression recalls some of the darkest moments of Spain’s recent history.

É no mundo anglo-saxónico, e não na Europa Continental, que os independentistas catalães encontrarão os seus melhores amigos e aliados.

E a Espanha acabará a perder mais uma batalha contra a Inglaterra, desta vez a batalha da democracia.

Branca

A few days before the Portuguese arrival in Buenos Aires,  Peter Throw decided to make a little detour and reached Tukuman, the founding city of Argentina, located in the central northern region of the country.

As he entered the city, he told the donkey:

-Castro... this is your Guimarães!...

But it was not for history that he went there. Instead, he checked in at the Central Post Office, leaving Castro outside the building looking at the passersby.

Three hours later, after waiting in line for a long time, Peter came back with a little parcel in his hand:

-Castro ... I have good news  for you ... and bad news...

Castro looked at him anxiously.

-The good news ... is that Cathy sent me the electronic bracelet...

And, after a moment of silence:

-The bad news, Castro... is that she did not send you the mirandese female-donkey...it was too big to travel in the pilots' cabin...

Castro lowered his head and was so sad that he almost cried. Peter tried to comfort him:

-Listen Castro... I am sorry ... there is nothing I can do... there are times when a male must be a true male... contention, Castro! ... contention is the distinguishing virtue of a true male ... look at the Catholic priests... you must wait, Castro...

It was in Tukuman that Peter learned from the newspapers of the iminent arrival of the Portuguese armada, headed by President De Susa.

Looking at the donkey, he tried to comfort him again:

-Don't worry, Castro... I'll find a solution... the note that Cathy sent me said that she is already there... anxious to join you... snow white... lovely eyes...a beauty... her name is Branca...

Three days later, as the Portuguese arrived in Buenos Aires, Peter and Castro were in for a long, dangerous journey, heading north through the Latin American jungle.

Meanwhile,  back at the Criminal Instruction Court in Matosinhos, an electronic bracelet was missing and nobody could account for it. The Court had recently received ten units of this expensive device, which were kept in a safe. Six units were given to six arguidos indicted for crimes of theft and heavy corruption. But only three units were left in the safe. A criminal inquiry was opened at the Court.

Bep Cricket

Transcript of the conversation between President-elect Donald Trump and Peter Throw, Part XXXII

Donald Trump (DT) - Peter...what's the meaning of  ...vaffanculo...?

Peter Throw (PT) - Oh well, Don ... Take it up in the ass ... fuck off...

DT - Does that Italian fellow who says vaffanculo left and right  also extend the middle-finger?

PT - Sure, he does...to party-politicians and journalists...His name is Bep Cricket...

DT - Oh... I like that... I also do that ...in private, I mean...

PT - He is a comedian ... he can do it in public...

DT - Peter...What is the Five-Star-Mouvement which has been so influential lately in Italian elections and in yesterday referendum...?

PT - It is a non-partisan, non-ideological mouvement that aims at establishing a kind of direct, internet-based democracy... It has many similarities with you...

DT - Does it?

PT - It is made up of outsiders, like you ... it fights the political establishment and the press, like you ... it aims at giving a voice to the Italian people, like you ... Its adversaries call it populist, like you...It has been a tremendous success, like you...

DT - How can that be ... a mouvement which is not a political party?

PT - Well ...we are talking about Italy... which is at the center of Catholic culture...Catholic culture is communitarian ... it does not like political parties ... neither religious sects, from which they derive...

DT - Do you mean that Italians do not like political parties?

PT - Yes, Don... they don't ... it is not part of  their tradition...Even if they say that they like them...actually they don't ... Period!...  Tradition speaks higher than rationality...

DT - Why not?

PT - Because parties divide people ...they put people agains each other ... political parties, like Protestant sects in religion, destroy the community...

DT - Oh... I never thought about that...

PT - Don ... if you want to reunite America ... to make America great again as a community ... you should learn more about Catholicism ... and leave Presbyterianism which is sectarian...

DT - ...

PT - ... The opposite of Catholic... which from the Greek katholicos means universal... is  sectarian, partisan...Modern political parties derive from the Protestant sects...

DT - ...

PT -The first political party in Britain was the Whig Party, later called Liberal Party, which descends from Scottish Presbyterianism...Actually, Don, your mother was from Scotland, wasn't she?...

DT - Yes Peter, my mother was from Scotland and was she who instilled in me religious sentiments...

PT - Political parties can survive in America ... which was founded by presbyterians and other Calvinista sects ... but in Catholic countries like Italy or Portugal which have never been exposed to Protestantism ... they have no future ...they ruin the nation...

DT -  ...

PT - Political parties are a cancer in Catholic culture ... a cancer which produces methastases in the social organism ... of which a partisan  press is a deadly one...

DT - There are many Catholics now in the United States ... At the time of our Foundation there were virtually none ... Catholicism was prohibited in British territories at that time ...Only one of our founding fathers was a Catholic...

PT - And as recently as the 1960's we know what happened to the only Catholic President of the United States so far...

DT - It's changing rapidly; Peter ...Now about 25% of the US population is Catholic...

PT - Yes... that's true... that's probably why resentment against political parties in the US is also on the rise... Don't forget that Catholics were the top voters for you... Actually you may go down in US history ... as the precursor of the American Bep Cricket...

DT - Do you antecipate some kind of a Five-Star-Mouvement in Portugal, Peter?

PT - For sure, Don ...sooner rather than later...

DT - I'll be all for it...

under one God

Transcript of the conversation between President-elect Donald Trump and Peter Throw, Part XXXI

Peter Throw (PT) - Don ... one of the most controversial of your statements during the Presidential campaign was this: "Imagine what our country could accomplish if we started working together as one people, under one God, saluting one flag," ... What did you mean?

Donald Trump (DT) - I want to restore that old tradition of America as a profoundly religious nation... Don't forget, Peter...God is named in the first paragraph of our Declaration of Independence...

PT - You mean people going to the mass every Sunday?...

DT - No, Peter ... I mean that religious tradition which was noted by Tocqueville in his classic  Democracy in America...a tradition that unites people...

PT - As opposed to party politics which divides them...Actually, the word religion itself comes the the latin religare... re-uniting ...uniting again...

DT - ...religion as a business of everyday life ... as a way of people relating to each other .. as a code of social conduct...and God as the supreme standard of all human action both in private and public life...

PT - You have different religions in America, Don...

DT - Yes, Peter ...different religions... different traditions of relating to God ...but God is one and the same for all religions... There is only one God, Peter!...

PT - Can't you imagine a nation... a community without God, Don?...

DT - No, Peter, I can't ...There is not, and there never was, in human history a nation without God......Without God society will end up in chaos, anarchy and violence...Look at Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union...

PT - It was a big mistake of Hillary ignoring God and religion... Actually, criticizing religion...and the Catholic religion in the first place...

DT- Yes, it was... most religious Americans voted for me... and above them all, white Catholics...A big mistake of Hillary and of her self-proclaimed intellectual elite...

PT -  Yes ...  you seem to be right ...You know, intellectuals exclude God from public life ...it all started with Kant ... the most influential modern philosopher among intellectuals and left-wing liberals...

DT - Peter ... Without God you cannot distinguish the true from the false... the rational from the irrational...the beautiful from the ugly ... the good from the evil... the just from the unjust...no way!...God is the common, supreme standard for all of mankind...

PT - ...And thus the figure of unity...

DT - Yes, Peter.... that's what I meant by "...under one God..."... God as the symbol of unity among Americans... The supremacy of religion over politics...

PT - You know, Don ...I think that Pope Francis would agree with you about the role of religion in society...

DT - Would he, Peter...?

The study, published in Biological Reviews, reveals that there are differences in male and female sexuality.
Dr Kanazawa, from the London School of Economics and Political Science, explained: “The theory suggests that women may not have sexual orientations in the same sense as men do.
“Rather than being straight or gay, to whom women are sexually attracted may depend largely on the particular partner, their reproductive status, and other circumstances.”
...
Dr Kanazawa believes that women have had to evolve to deal with the experience of men having more than one partner.
He claimed: “Even though humans have been mildly polygynous throughout evolutionary history, polygynous marriages are often characterized by conflict and tension among co-wives.
“I propose that occasional sex among cowives may have reduced such conflict and tension, and increased their reproductive success.
“Female sexual fluidity may have evolved as an adaptation to facilitate it.”

O Papa Francisco não entende as causas da pobreza e da riqueza

Any serious look at the history of human beings over the millennia shows that the species began in poverty. It is not poverty, but prosperity, that needs explaining. Poverty is automatic, but prosperity requires many things — none of which is equally distributed around the world or even within a given society.

Geographic settings are radically different, both among nations and within nations. So are demographic differences, with some nations and groups having a median age over 40 and others having a median age under 20. This means that some groups have several times as much adult work experience as others. Cultures are also radically different in many ways.

para o Francisco

Just two charts I would ask the pope to look at.

1.) Human progress: The amount of people, life expectancy and global personal GDP. These “hockey sticks” show that, since the advent of fossil fuels, the human condition has improved immensely.

2.) The factual record of CO2 and temperature in the geological history of the earth.

There is no apparent linkage, so why is CO2 suddenly the climate control knob when there were years with higher CO2 and lower temperatures?

I won’t go any further except to say I can’t believe his excellency, if exposed to this, would not at the very least question the positions he has adopted. It is my hope while he is here that he at least glances at other information such as this.

a influência nefasta do comunismo

How communism has influenced Greece’s history
Communism and radical leftism have a long historic narrative in Greece. When the Soviet Union suddenly collapsed after failing to deliver its promised “Communist dreamland,” it surprised almost everyone. But Greece never fully realized this fall’s significance. Nostalgia about a communist utopia persisted in the minds of some citizens, and this underlying narrative has cultivated an attachment with Russia over the years. NATO, the European Union and the United States, on the other hand, were often demonized.
The Greek people are now suffering because the government has continued to implement Communist-like policies. A huge leviathan state with strong trade unions, nationalized industries, barriers to business freedoms and a massive corrupt bureaucracy have all diminished wealth creation in the country.
Comentário: O mesmo em Portugal, os portugueses não compreenderam o significado do colapso da União Soviética. E não tiraram as respetivas ilações.

a aliança fatal

Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, yesterday warned that the surge of the radical left and right was creating the conditions for “revolution” in Europe.
“It was always the same game before the biggest tragedies in our European history, this tactical alliance between radicals from all sides," he told the Financial Times.
Meanwhile, his predecessor, Hermann Van Rompuy, will enter the ranks of the aristocracy. King Philippe of Belgium is to make him a Count, according to local media.

when you bite the Invisible Hand… it always bites back

In Why We Bite the Invisible Hand, Peter Foster delves into a conundrum: How can we at once live in a world of expanding technological wonders and unprecedented well-being, and yet hear a constant drumbeat of condemnation of the system that created it? That system, capitalism, which is based on private property and voluntary dealings, is guided by the “Invisible Hand,” the metaphor for economic markets associated with the great Eighteenth Century Scottish philosopher Adam Smith. The hand guides people to serve others while pursuing their own interests, and produces a broader good that, as Smith put it, is “no part of their intention.” Critics. however, claim that the hand is tainted by greed, leads to inequity and dangerous corporate power, and threatens not merely resource depletion but planetary disaster. Foster probes misunderstanding, fear and dislike of capitalism from the dark satanic mills of the Industrial Revolution through to the murky concept of sustainable development. His journey takes him from Kirkcaldy, the town of Smith’s birth, through Moscow McDonald’s and Karl Marx’s Manchester, on a trip to Cuba to smuggle dollars, and into the backrooms of the United Nations. His cast of characters includes the man who wrote the entry for “capitalism” in the Great Soviet Encyclopaedia, a family of Kirkcaldy butchers, radical individualist Ayn Rand, father of evolutionary theory Charles Darwin, numerous Nobel prizewinning economists, colonies of chimpanzees, and “philanthrocapitalist” Bill Gates. Foster suggests that the key to his conundrum lies in the field of evolutionary psychology, which offers to help us understand both why some of what Adam Smith called our complex “moral sentiments” may be outdated, and why so many of our economic assumptions tend to be wrong. We are hunter gatherers with iPhones. The Invisible Hand is counterintuitive to minds formed predominantly in small close-knit tribal communities where there were no extensive markets, no money, no technological advance and no economic growth. Equally important, we don’t have to understand the rapidly evolving economic “natural order” to operate within it and enjoy its benefits any more than we need to understand our nervous or respiratory systems to stay alive. But that also makes us prone to support morally-appealing but counterproductive policies, such as minimum wage legislation. Foster notes that politicians and bureaucrats -- consciously or unconsciously -- exploit moral confusion and economic ignorance. Ideological obsession with market imperfections, income gaps, corporate power, resource exhaustion and the environment are useful justifications for those seeking political control of our lives. The book refutes claims that capitalism’s validity depends on the system being “perfect” or economic actors “rational.” It also notes the key difference between capitalism and capitalists, who are inclined to misunderstand the system as much as anyone. Foster points to the astonishing rise in recent decades of radical, unelected environmental non-governmental organizations, ENGOs. Closely related to that rise, Foster examines with one of the biggest and most contentious issues of our time: projected catastrophic man-made climate change. He notes that while this theory is cited as the greatest example in history of “market failure,” it in fact demonstrates how both scientific analysis and economic policy can become perverted once something is framed as a “moral issue,” and thus allegedly “beyond debate.” Foster’s book is not a paean to greed, selfishness or radical individualism. He stresses that the greatest joys in life come from family, friendship and participation in community, sport and the arts. What has long fascinated him is the relentless claim that capitalism taints or destroys these aspects of humanity rather than promoting them. Moreover, he concludes, when you bite the Invisible Hand… it always bites back.

A nova geração está a destruir a língua

 Aí está uma verdade intemporal:

The common language is disappearing. It is slowly being crushed to death under the weight of verbal conglomerate, a pseudospeech at once both pretentious and feeble, that is created daily by millions of blunders and inaccuracies in grammar, syntax, idiom, metaphor, logic, and common sense.... In the history of modern English there is no period in which such victory over thought-in-speech has been so widespread. Nor in the past has the general idiom, on which we depend for our very understanding of vital matters, been so seriously distorted.
A. Tibbets and C. Tibbets, What's Happening to American English?, 1978

Recent graduates, including those with university degrees, seem to have no mastery of the language at all. They cannot construct a simple declarative sentence, either orally or in writing. They cannot spell common, everyday words. Punctuation is apparently no longer taught. Grammar is a complete mystery to almost all recent graduates.
J. Mersand, Attitudes toward English Teaching, 1961

From every college in the country goes up the cry, "Our freshmen can't spell, can't punctuate." Every high school is in disrepair because its pupils are so ignorant of the merest rudiments.
C. H. Ward, 1917

The vocabularies of the majority of high-school pupils are amazingly small. I always try to use simple English, and yet I have talked to classes when quite a minority of the pupils did not comprehend more than half of what I said.
 M. W. Smith, "Methods of Study in English," 1889

Unless the present progress of change [is] arrested...there can be no doubt that, in another century, the dialect of the Americans will become utterly unintelligible to an Englishman...
Captain Thomas Hamilton, 1833

Our language is degenerating very fast.

Human Emissions Saved Planet
Over the past 150 million years, carbon dioxide had been drawn down steadily (by plants) from about 3,000 parts per million to about 280 parts per million before the Industrial Revolution. If this trend continued, the carbon dioxide level would have become too low to support life on Earth. Human fossil fuel use and clearing land for crops have boosted carbon dioxide from its lowest level in the history of the Earth back to 400 parts per million today.
At 400 parts per million, all our food crops, forests, and natural ecosystems are still on a starvation diet for carbon dioxide. The optimum level of carbon dioxide for plant growth, given enough water and nutrients, is about 1,500 parts per million, nearly four times higher than today. Greenhouse growers inject carbon-dioxide to increase yields. Farms and forests will produce more if carbon-dioxide keeps rising.
We have no proof increased carbon dioxide is responsible for the earth’s slight warming over the past 300 years. There has been no significant warming for 18 years while we have emitted 25 per cent of all the carbon dioxide ever emitted. Carbon dioxide is vital for life on Earth and plants would like more of it. Which should we emphasize to our children?

Churchill, 1920

Zionism versus Bolshevism.

A Struggle for the Soul of the Jewish People

By the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill.

SOME people like Jews and some do not; but no thoughtful man can doubt the fact that they are beyond all question the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has ever appeared in the world.

Disraeli, the Jew Prime Minister of England, and Leader of the Conservative Party, who was always true to his race and proud of his origin, said on a well-known occasion: "The Lord deals with the nations as the nations deal with the Jews." Certainly when we look at the miserable state of Russia, where of all countries in the world the Jews were the most cruelly treated, and contrast it with the fortunes of our own country, which seems to have been so providentially preserved amid the awful perils of these times, we must admit that nothing that has since happened in the history of the world has falsified the truth of Disraeli's confident assertion.

Good and Bad Jews

The conflict between good and evil which proceeds unceasingly in the breast of man nowhere reaches such an intensity as in the Jewish race. The dual nature of mankind is nowhere more strongly or more terribly exemplified. We owe to the Jews in the Christian revelation a system of ethics which, even if it were entirely separated from the supernatural, would be incomparably the most precious possession of mankind, worth in fact the fruits of all other wisdom and learning put together. On that system and by that faith there has been built out of the wreck of the Roman Empire the whole of our existing civilization.

And it may well be that this same astounding race may at the present time be in the actual process of producing another system of morals and philosophy, as malevolent as Christianity was benevolent, which, if not arrested, would shatter irretrievably all that Christianity has rendered possible. It would almost seem as if the gospel of Christ and the gospel of Antichrist were destined to originate among the same people; and that this mystic and mysterious race had been chosen for the supreme manifestations, both of the divine and the diabolical.

'National' Jews

There can be no greater mistake than to attribute to each individual a recognizable share in the qualities which make up the national character. There are all sorts of men -- good, bad and, for the most part, indifferent -- in every country, and in every race. Nothing is more wrong than to deny to an individual, on account of race or origin, his right to be judged on his personal merits and conduct. In a people of peculiar genius like the Jews, contrasts are more vivid, the extremes are more widely separated, the resulting consequences are more decisive.

At the present fateful period there are three main lines of political conception among the Jews. two of which are helpful and hopeful in a very high degree to humanity, and the third absolutely destructive.

First there are the Jews who, dwelling in every country throughout the world, identify themselves with that country, enter into its national life and, while adhering faithfully to their own religion, regard themselves as citizens in the fullest sense of the State which has received them. Such a Jew living in England would say, "I am an English man practising the Jewish faith." This is a worthy conception, and useful in the highest degree. We in Great Britain well know that during the great struggle the influence of what may be called the "National Jews" in many lands was cast preponderatingly on the side of the Allies; and in our own Army Jewish soldiers have played a most distinguished part, some rising to the command of armies, others winning the Victoria Cross for valour.

The National Russian Jews, in spite of the disabilities under which they have suffered, have managed to play an honorable and useful part in the national life even of Russia. As bankers and industrialists they have strenuously promoted the development of Russia's economic resources, and they were foremost in the creation of those remarkable organizations, the Russian Co-operative Societies. In politics their support has been given, for the most part, to liberal and progressive movements, and they have been among the staunchest upholder of friendship with France and Great Britain.

International Jews

In violent opposition to all this sphere of Jewish effort rise the schemes of the International Jews. The adherents of this sinister confederacy are mostly men reared up among the unhappy populations of countries where Jews are persecuted on account of their race. Most, if not all, of them have forsaken the faith of their forefathers, and divorced from their minds all spiritual hopes of the next world. This movement among the Jews is not new. From the days of Spartacus-Weishaupt to those of Karl Marx, and down to Trotsky (Russia), Bela Kun (Hungary), Rosa Luxembourg (Germany), and Emma Goldman (United States), this world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality, has been steadily growing. It played, as a modern writer, Mrs. Webster, has so ably shown, a definitely recognizable part in the tragedy of the French Revolution. It has been the mainspring of every subversive movement during the Nineteenth Century; and now at last this band of extraordinary personalities from the underworld of the great cities of Europe and America have gripped the Russian people by the hair of their heads and have become practically the undisputed masters of that enormous empire.

Terrorist Jews

There is no need to exaggerate the part played in the creation of Bolshevism and in the actual bringing about of the Russian Revolution, by these international and for the most part atheistical Jews, it is certainly a very great one; it probably outweighs all others. With the notable exception of Lenin, the majority of the leading figures are Jews. Moreover, the principal inspiration and driving power comes from the Jewish leaders. Thus Tchitcherin, a pure Russian, is eclipsed by his nominal subordinate Litvinoff, and the influence of Russians like Bukharin or Lunacharski cannot be compared with the power of Trotsky, or of Zinovieff, the Dictator of the Red Citadel (Petrograd) or of Krassin or Radek -- all Jews. In the Soviet institutions the predominance of Jews is even more astonishing. And the prominent, if not indeed the principal, part in the system of terrorism applied by the Extraordinary Commissions for Combating Counter-Revolution has been taken by Jews, and in some notable cases by Jewesses. The same evil prominence was obtained by Jews in the brief period of terror during which Bela Kun ruled in Hungary. The same phenomenon has been presented in Germany (especially in Bavaria), so far as this madness has been allowed to prey upon the temporary prostration of the German people. Although in all these countries there are many non-Jews every whit as bad as the worst of the Jewish revolutionaries, the part played by the latter in proportion to their numbers in the population is astonishing.

'Protector of the Jews'

Needless to say, the most intense passions of revenge have been excited in the breasts of the Russian people. Wherever General Denikin's authority could reach, protection was always accorded to the Jewish population, and strenuous efforts were made by his officers to prevent reprisals and to punish those guilty of them. So much was this the case that the Petlurist propaganda against General Denikin denounced him as the Protector of the Jews. The Misses Healy, nieces of Mr. Tim Healy, in relating their personal experiences in Kieff, have declared that to their knowledge on more than one occasion officers who committed offenses against Jews were reduced to the ranks and sent out of the city to the front. But the hordes of brigands by whom the whole. vast expanse of the Russian Empire is becoming infested do not hesitate to gratify their lust for blood and for revenge at the expense of the innocent Jewish population whenever an opportunity occurs. The brigand Makhno, the hordes of Petlura and of Gregorieff, who signalized their every success by the most brutal massacres, everywhere found among the half-stupefied, half-infuriated population an eager response to anti-Semitism in its worst and foulest forms.

The fact that in many cases Jewish interests and Jewish places of worship are excepted by the Bolsheviks from their universal hostility has tended more and more to associate the Jewish race in Russia with the villainies, which are now being perpetrated. This is an injustice on millions of helpless people, most of whom are themselves sufferers from the revolutionary regime. It becomes, therefore, specially important to foster and develop any strongly-marked Jewish movement which leads directly away from these fatal associations. And it is here that Zionism has such a deep significance for the whole world at the present time.

A Home for the Jews

Zionism offers the third sphere to the political conceptions of the Jewish race. In violent contrast to international communism, it presents to the Jew a national idea of a commanding character. it has fallen to the British Government, as the result of the conquest of Palestine, to have the opportunity and the responsibility of securing for the Jewish race all over the world a home and centre of national life. The statesmanship and historic sense of Mr. Balfour were prompt to seize this opportunity. Declarations have now been made which have irrevocably decided the policy of Great Britain. The fiery energies of Dr. Weissmann, the leader, for practical purposes, of the Zionist project. backed by many of the most prominent British Jews, and supported by the full authority of Lord Allenby, are all directed to achieving the success of this inspiring movement.

Of course, Palestine is far too small to accommodate more than a fraction of the Jewish race, nor do the majority of national Jews wish to go there. But if, as may well happen, there should be created in our own lifetime by the banks of the Jordan a Jewish State under the protection of the British Crown, which might comprise three or four millions of Jews, an event would have occurred in the history of the world which would, from every point of view, be beneficial, and would be especially in harmony with the truest interests of the British Empire.

Zionism has already become a factor in the political convulsions of Russia, as a powerful competing influence in Bolshevik circles with the international communistic system. Nothing could be more significant than the fury with which Trotsky has attacked the Zionists generally, and Dr. Weissmann in particular. The cruel penetration of his mind leaves him in no doubt that his schemes of a world-wide communistic State under Jewish domination are directly thwarted and hindered by this new ideal, which directs the energies and the hopes of Jews in every land towards a simpler, a truer, and a far more attainable goal. The struggle which is now beginning between the Zionist and Bolshevik Jews is little less than a struggle for the soul of the Jewish people.

Duty of Loyal Jews

It is particularly important in these circumstances that the national Jews in every country who are loyal to the land of their adoption should come forward on every occasion, as many of them in England have already done, and take a prominent part in every measure for combating the Bolshevik conspiracy. In this way they will be able to vindicate the honor of the Jewish name and make it clear to all the world that the Bolshevik movement is not a Jewish movement, but is repudiated vehemently by the great mass of the Jewish race.

But a negative resistance to Bolshevism in any field is not enough. Positive and practicable alternatives are needed in the moral as well as in the social sphere; and in building up with the utmost possible rapidity a Jewish national centre in Palestine which may become not only a refuge to the oppressed from the unhappy lands of Central Europe, but which will also be a symbol of Jewish unity and the temple of Jewish glory, a task is presented on which many blessings rest.

An Essay on Economic Theory, Richard Cantillon, pdf.
Aqui, numa breve biografia:
"Joseph Schumpeter, the great historian of economic thought and student of Eugen von Bohm-Bawerk, described the Essai as "the first systematic penetration of the field of economics."[5] In his treatise on the history of economic thought, Murray N. Rothbard named Cantillon "the founding father of modern economics."
The mystery of Richard Cantillon begins with his birth, which is now placed during the 1680s in southwest Ireland.[8] He was born into a family of Catholic landlords who had fought for the Stuart cause, and thus were dispossessed of their lands by Cromwell. His origins in the landed gentry shines through in the Essai where the landlord, the truly independent person in the economy, plays the crucial decisionmaking role in both production and consumption.
The Essai follows a progressive arrangement of ideas appropriate for the elucidation of economic theory (like Menger's Principles), and also shows many links to Cantillon's own life.
Part one is an analysis of the real economy of the isolated state loosely based on the precapitalist economy of his family's heritage.
The second half of part one is where Cantillon becomes the first economist to develop the key Austrian insights concerning the entrepreneur and the role entrepreneurship plays in the economy.[10] The entrepreneur is the bearer of risks inflicted by the changes in market demand. This is a direct reflection of Cantillon's own early career as an assistant to British Paymaster James Bridges during the War of Spanish Succession. There he learned and excelled in the role of accountant and contract negotiator, and learned the basics of banking and international finance.
In part two of the Essai, Cantillon laid out his pathbreaking Austrian analysis of the monetary economy, exposing the great error of mercantilism (that money is wealth).
In part three of the Essai, Cantillon addresses the issues of foreign trade, exchange rates, and the role of banks. Here, Cantillon makes some of his most important contributions to economic understanding. This section is a critique of mercantilist policies and the financial innovations of John Law during the Mississippi System and South Sea Bubble. This is a reflection of the third period in Cantillon's career, during which he made a fortune by understanding Law's system and its inevitable consequences."

Queen Lydia Liliuokalani

Queen Lydia Liliuokalani

(September 2, 1838 - November 11, 1917)

Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian islands. She felt her mission was to preserve the islands for their native residents. In 1898, Hawaii was annexed to the United States and Queen Liliuokalani was forced to give up her throne.

Gini = 0,25 entre os caçadores-recolectores

How Egalitarian Are Hunter-Gatherers?

Hunter-gatherers have long been anthropology’s favorite exemplar—of whatever social, political, or moral principle an analyst wishes to support. The twists and turns in this intellectual history have been ably reviewed elsewhere (e.g., Winterhalder 1993; Kelly 1995;Marlowe 2005). We wish to avoid any suggestion of endorsing a new stereotype for what is inherently a diverse set of societies. However, we do think our findings support a reassessment of the view that hunter-gatherers (with a few obvious exceptions) are characterized by pervasive equality in wealth and life chances.
The intergenerational wealth transmission coefficients estimated here range from values that are very low and statistically indistinguishable from zero to ones near or above 0.4. Let us focus on intermediate values of β≈0.25, close to several measures (Table 5). While far below a perfect transmission rate of 1.0, this measure indicates a fairly high bias in the life chances according to the parent’s wealth. Indeed, as detailed in the introductory paper in this forum by Bowles et al., β=0.25 implies that a child born into the top wealth decile of the population is 5 times more likely to remain in the top wealth decile than a child whose parents were in the bottom decile. Even a β of 0.1 implies that a child born into the top wealth decile is twice as likely to remain there as is one born into the bottom decile. These results suggest that in hunter-gatherer populations, even those with extensive food-sharing and other leveling devices (Cashdan 1982), the offspring of those better off will tend to remain so, and conversely.
But how much wealth inequality actually exists in these populations? The Gini coefficients listed in Table 5 are low compared to contemporary societies, and even to agricultural and pastoral populations (see other papers in this forum); but they are far from negligible. Excluding the low coefficients for weight, the Ginis range from 0.2 to 0.5, and even including weight the α-weighted average is 0.25 (Table 5). This value is the same as the income inequality in contemporary Denmark (0.25), the country with lowest such value in 2007 (UNDP 2007). Thus, to the extent that our measures for this set of foragers are representative, wealth inequality is moderate—that is to say, very low by current world standards, but far from a state of “primitive communism” (cf. Lee 1988).
The combined picture from the intergenerational transmission (β) and inequality (Gini) estimates suggests we may need to rethink the conventional portrayal of foragers as highly egalitarian and unconcerned with wealth. Even classic examples of hunter-gatherer society display more inequality than is widely appreciated. For example, evidence indicates that leadership was much stronger among the Ju/’hoansi in the past before the Bantu arrived, with the best foraging areas (n!ore) held by strong families (Wiessner 2002), and the language has distinct words for poor, ordinary and rich.
